Ira Hamilton Hayes was born on January 12, 1955, in Ira, Michigan. His parents were John and Mary Hayes. He had four siblings: two brothers and two sisters. Ira’s father died when he was just four years old. His mother remarried and had two more children.
Ira was a good student and played football and basketball in high school. He excelled in track and field, setting state records in the shot put and discus throw. After graduation, he attended college on a track scholarship.
Ira’s career began as a professional football player. He played for the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns. He was a member of the Lions’ 1957 NFL Championship team. After his football career ended, Ira became a successful businessman. He is the owner of Hayes Enterprises, a construction company.
Ira has been married three times. His first wife was Barbara Ann Kennedy. They had three children together: Ira, Jr., Kevin, and Erin. Ira and Barbara divorced in 1974. His second wife was Linda Sue Molnar. They had one child together, a daughter named Shannon. Ira and Linda divorced in 1984. His third wife is Pamela Jean Hayes. They have two children together: Hamilton and Hayden.
Ira is a philanthropist and supports many charities. He is a member of the board of directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He has also served on the board of directors of the United Way of Greater Cleveland.
Ira has received many honors and awards during his lifetime. In 1957, he was named the NFL Rookie of the Year. In 1971, he was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends Club.
