Hugh Prather was born in Houston, Texas, on August 15, 1943. His father was an engineer and his mother was a homemaker. He has two older sisters. Prather was a good student and was active in sports, playing football and baseball. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a degree in English.
Prather began his career as a writer and editor for a small publishing company. He later became a freelance writer and wrote for several magazines, including “Esquire” and ” Playboy.” He also wrote several books, including “The Notebook” and “The Naked Now.”
In the early 1970s, Prather met and began working with Gary Zukav, a spiritual teacher. Together they wrote “The Dancing Wu Li Masters,” which became a bestseller. Prather also wrote “Notes to Myself,” a best-selling book of affirmations.
In the 1980s, Prather’s marriage to his wife, Linda, began to unravel. The couple divorced in 1988. Prather later married Deborah Newell, with whom he had two daughters.
Prather continued to write and speak about spiritual matters. He also became interested in photography and began exhibiting his work. He died of cancer on February 16, 2007.
