Faye Dunaway is an American actress. She has won an Academy Award, three Golden Globes, a BAFTA, an Emmy, and was the first-ever recipient of a Leopard Club Award which honors film professionals whose work has left a lasting mark on cinema. She is also a recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Dunaway was born on January 14, 1941, in Bascom, Florida, the daughter of Grace April (née Smith), a housewife and amateur actress, and John MacDowell Dunaway, Jr., a career military officer who later became a general manager for the Associated Press. She has English and Scottish ancestry. She was raised in a strict Baptist family. When she was six, her parents divorced. Her mother later remarried to Paul Leonard Newman, whom Dunaway has described as “a wild and wonderful man”.
Dunaway’s debut was in the original Broadway production of The Happiest Girl in the World (1961) which starred Robert Morse and won her a Theatre World Award. She appeared in the 1963 film version of the musical with Morse and Walter Matthau. In 1964, she starred in the thriller Lady in a Cage with Olivia de Havilland, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. That same year, she appeared in the comedy Send Me No Flowers with Rock Hudson and Doris Day.
In 1967, Dunaway starred in the biographical drama Bonnie and Clyde with Warren Beatty. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama.
In 1971, Dunaway starred in the disaster film The Poseidon Adventure opposite Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama.
