As a child, Hillary was fascinated by aircraft and wanted to become a pilot, but his family could not afford the training. He was educated at Tuakau District High School and Auckland Grammar School. In 1934, he spent three months at Mount Cook School in New Zealand, where he learned climbing and mountaineering skills.

After leaving school, Hillary worked as a beekeeper and did some farming. He also joined the New Zealand Alpine Club and began climbing mountains in the Southern Alps. In 1939, he climbed Mount Ollivier, his first major mountain.

In 1940, Hillary enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator. He trained in Canada and then served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he returned to mountaineering.

In 1951, Hillary made his first attempt on Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. He reached an altitude of 8,750 meters (28,700 feet) before being forced to turn back. The following year, he made another attempt on Everest with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. On May 29, 1953, they became the first people to reach the summit of Everest.

After his successful ascent of Everest, Hillary devoted himself to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal. He helped set up the Himalayan Trust, which built schools, hospitals, and bridges in Nepal. He also led the first expedition to climb Mount Everest from its southern side in Nepal.

In 1985, Hillary was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to mountaineering and charity. He died on January 11, 2008, at the age of 88.
