Diana Ossana is an American screenwriter and producer. She is best known for her work on the film Brokeback Mountain, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Born in Tucson, Arizona, Ossana was raised in a small town in New Mexico. She is the youngest of three children. Her father was a high school teacher and her mother was a homemaker. Ossana began her career as a journalist, working for various newspapers in New Mexico and Arizona. She later transitioned into screenwriting, and her first screenplay was optioned by a Hollywood studio.
Ossana’s breakout success came with the release of Brokeback Mountain in 2005. The film, which starred Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $178 million at the box office. Ossana won an Academy Award for her work on the film, becoming the first woman to win the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In addition to her work on Brokeback Mountain, Ossana has also written and produced the films Out of the Furnace (2013) and Hell or High Water (2016). She is currently working on a biopic about the life of country music legend Loretta Lynn.
Ossana has been in a relationship with producer and director Jim Sheridan since 2002. The couple has two children together.
