Fact
Son of Leo Kelly Kozlowski, a reporter, boxer, and investigator with New Jersey Public Service Transport, and Agnes Kozlowski, a school crossing guard. He falsely claimed that his father was a Newark cop turned police detective.
Dennis Kozlowski is an American former CEO of Tyco International, and is currently serving a prison sentence for crimes related to his tenure at the company. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 16, 1946, the son of a Polish immigrant father and an Italian-American mother. He has two sisters. He was educated at Seton Hall Preparatory School and Seton Hall University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
He began his career with Arthur Andersen, and then joined Tyco in 1975. He rose through the ranks of the company, becoming CEO in 1992. He is credited with transforming Tyco from a small manufacturer of electrical components into a diversified conglomerate with interests in security, healthcare, and other industries.
Under Kozlowski’s leadership, Tyco became one of the most acquisitive companies in the world, making more than 100 acquisitions. This growth strategy eventually led to problems, as the company became burdened with debt and struggled to integrate its many acquisitions. In 2002, Kozlowski was indicted on charges of evading sales tax on art purchases, and he resigned from Tyco. He was later convicted of those charges, as well as other charges related to his misuse of company funds, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Kozlowski has been married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce, and he has three children from that marriage. His second marriage, to Karen Kozlowski, ended in divorce in 2005. He has a net worth of $100 million.
