David Allan Coe is an American singer, songwriter and musician who has written and performed songs in a variety of genres. He first came to prominence in the 1970s as a member of the Outlaw Country movement, and has since written and recorded songs that have been covered by a wide range of artists. Coe has released more than two dozen albums, and his songs have been featured in films and television shows. He is also a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Coe was born in Akron, Ohio, on September 6, 1939. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a housewife. He has four siblings. Coe’s early education took place in a one-room schoolhouse. He dropped out of high school in the 10th grade, and began working odd jobs. He eventually found work as a musician, playing in clubs and bars.
In the early 1970s, Coe began writing songs for other artists, including Johnny Cash and Tanya Tucker. He also released his own album, Penitentiary Blues. The album’s success led to a recording contract with Columbia Records.
Coe’s subsequent albums were met with mixed reviews, but he continued to find success as a songwriter. His songs have been recorded by a wide range of artists, including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and George Strait. Coe has also released several live albums, and his most recent studio album, The Mystery Train, was released in 2016.
