Country Joe McDonald is an American musician who was a member of the 1960s counterculture movement. He is best known for his work with the band Country Joe and the Fish, as well as his solo career.
McDonald was born in Washington, D.C., on January 1, 1942. His parents were Josephine (née Zachary) and Worden McDonald. He has four siblings: Robert, John, Gloria, and Jimmy. McDonald was raised in El Monte, California. He attended El Monte High School, where he was a member of the track team.
After high school, McDonald joined the United States Navy. He served for two years and was stationed in Japan. After his discharge, he returned to California and attended Los Angeles City College. He then transferred to Berkeley, where he studied music and poetry.
In 1964, McDonald met Barry Melton at a folk music club in Berkeley. The two formed a band called Country Joe and the Fish. The band became one of the most popular acts of the 1960s counterculture movement. They released four albums between 1965 and 1968, including the live album “Country Joe and the Fish at Woodstock”.
In the 1970s, McDonald began a solo career. He released his debut album, “Paradise with an Ocean View”, in 1971. He has since released more than a dozen albums, including “Peace on Earth” (1973), “Hold On” (1975), and “This Is War” (1989).
McDonald has been married three times. His first wife was Tasha Tudor; they were married from 1964 to 1966. His second wife was Kathy McDonald; they were married from 1968 to 1970. His third wife is Debbie Goldblatt; they have been married since 1977. McDonald has four children: Joel, Jesse, Jasmine, and Jakob.
