Cissy Houston (born Emily Cissy Drinkard; September 30, 1933) is an American singer and background vocalist. She was a member of The Sweet Inspirations, which also included her cousins Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick, and Aretha Franklin. Houston has been cited as “one of pop music’s greatest vocalists”.
Early Life
Cissy Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, on September 30, 1933. She was the daughter of Nettie (née McCoy) and Delia Mae (née Drinkard) Houston. Her mother was a gospel singer, and her father was a musician. She had seven siblings: Larry, Lee, Lillian, Louise, Emily (twin sister), John and David. Houston’s parents were both African American.

Career
Houston’s first professional recording was with The Sweet Inspirations on the 1966 album Sweet Inspirations on Atlantic Records. The group also recorded backing vocals for Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour” and Aretha Franklin’s “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)”.
In 1973, Houston released her debut solo album, entitled Presenting Cissy Houston. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 chart and number four on the Billboard R&B chart. The album’s first single, “Think It Over”, peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number five on the Billboard R&B chart.
In 1977, Houston released her second solo album, entitled Thinking About You. The album peaked at number 46 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 15 on the Billboard R&B chart. The album’s first single, “One Way Ticket”, peaked at number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 11 on the Billboard R&B chart.
In 1983, Houston released her third solo album, entitled One Wish. The album peaked at number 54 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 20 on the Billboard R&B chart. The album’s first single, “Saving All My Love for You”, peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became Houston’s only single to date to top the chart. The song also won Houston a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

In 2013, Houston released her sixth studio album, entitled Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances. The album peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200 chart and number three on the Billboard R&B chart.

Houston married Bobby Brown in 1992. The couple had one child together, Bobbi Kristina Brown (1993-2015). Houston and Brown divorced in 2007.
