Charlie Rich was born in Colt, Arkansas on December 14, 1932. His parents were sharecroppers and he was the youngest of six children. Rich’s father died when he was four years old and his mother remarried when he was eleven. Rich dropped out of high school in 1948 and joined the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Enid, Oklahoma where he played the piano in a local bar. After his discharge from the Air Force, Rich returned to Arkansas and began playing the piano in clubs in Memphis, Tennessee.
Rich’s big break came in 1962 when he was signed by Sun Records. He released his first single, “Whirlwind”, that year. The following year, Rich had a hit with “Big Boss Man”. He also wrote and recorded “Mohair Sam” which was later a hit for Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. In 1964, Rich left Sun Records and signed with RCA Victor. He had a string of hits on the country charts including “Behind Closed Doors” and “The Most Beautiful Girl”.
Rich’s career stalled in the 1970s but he made a comeback in the 1980s with a series of successful albums for Epic Records. He also toured with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings as part of the Outlaw Country movement. Rich died of a heart attack on July 25, 1995.
