Charles Oakley is a retired American professional basketball player. He was born on December 18, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Charles and Shirley Oakley. His father was a welder and his mother was a homemaker. He has four brothers and one sister. He attended John Hay High School in Cleveland, where he played basketball and football. After graduation, he attended the University of Virginia on a basketball scholarship. He played four years of college basketball and was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft.
He played for the Bulls for 10 years, winning the NBA Championship in 1991 and 1992. He was traded to the New York Knicks in 1995 and played for them for 10 years. He helped the Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1999. He retired from the NBA in 2004.
Since retiring from the NBA, Oakley has worked as a commentator for ESPN and as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats. He also owns a clothing line and a vineyard.
