Born in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, Carroll began his career with Newcastle United’s youth academy. He made his first-team debut in 2006, and became a regular starter in the 2007–08 season. He scored his first senior goal in a 1–1 draw against Wigan Athletic in December 2007. Carroll was loaned to Preston North End for the 2008–09 season, where he helped the team win promotion to the Championship. He returned to Newcastle and scored 17 goals in the 2009–10 season.
In January 2011, Carroll was signed by Liverpool for a fee of £35 million, a British record transfer fee for a footballer. He spent six months on loan at West Ham United, before returning to Liverpool. He was loaned out to Newcastle United for the 2012–13 season, and then sold to the club permanently in 2013.
Carroll has represented England at under-19 and under-21 level. He made his senior debut in 2010, and has since earned 19 caps, scoring four goals.
Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, on 6 January 1989, the son of Suzanne and Robert Carroll. He has two older sisters, Vicky and Joanne. His father worked as a roofer and his mother was a hairdresser.

Carroll was educated at Joseph Swan School in Gateshead. He played football for local team Gateshead Redheugh Boys Club. He was scouted by Newcastle United at age nine, and joined the club’s academy in 1998.
Carroll made his first-team debut for Newcastle United on 10 August 2006, coming on as a substitute for Shola Ameobi in a 2–1 victory over Palermo in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. He made his first start for the club on 16 September 2006, in a 3–1 League Cup victory over Barnsley.
Carroll scored his first senior goal for Newcastle on 15 December 2007, equalising in a 1–1 draw against Wigan Athletic. He finished the 2007–08 season with four goals in 28 appearances.
In August 2008, Carroll was loaned to Preston North End for the 2008–09 season. He scored his first goal for Preston on 13 September 2008, in a 3–2 victory over Queens Park Rangers. He finished the season with 19 goals in 39 appearances, helping Preston win promotion to the Championship.

Carroll returned to Newcastle for the 2009–10 season. He scored 17 goals in 39 appearances, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa on 2 May 2010.
On 31 January 2011, Carroll was signed by Liverpool for a fee of £35 million, a British record transfer fee for a footballer. He made his Liverpool debut on 3 February 2011, coming on as a substitute for Dirk Kuyt in a 2–0 victory over Fulham.
On 31 August 2011, Carroll was loaned to West Ham United for the 2011–12 season. He scored his first goal for West Ham on 10 September 2011, in a 3–0 victory over Bolton Wanderers. He finished the season with seven goals in 24 appearances.
On 2 September 2012, Carroll was loaned to Newcastle United for the 2012–13 season. He scored his first goal for Newcastle on 29 September 2012, in a 2–1 victory over Chelsea. He finished the season with 11 goals in 24 appearances.

On 5 July 2013, Carroll was sold to Newcastle United for a fee of £15 million. He has since scored 34 goals in 134 appearances for the club.
Carroll has represented England at under-19 and under-21 level. He made his senior debut for England on 10 August 2010, coming on as a substitute for Darren Bent in a 2–1 friendly victory over Hungary at Wembley Stadium. He has earned 19 caps, scoring four goals.
