Abraham was born in the city of Ur in Mesopotamia, in the year 1848 BCE. His father, Terah, was a idol-maker, and his mother, Sarah, was a homemaker. Abraham had two brothers, Haran and Nahor, and a sister, Milcah. When he was young, his family moved to the city of Haran.
At the age of twenty-five, Abraham married his first wife, Sarai. Ten years later, they had their first child, Ishmael. When Abraham was eighty-six years old, Sarai bore him a second son, Isaac.
Abraham’s career began when he was chosen by God to lead his people out of Mesopotamia and into the Promised Land of Canaan. He did as he was commanded, and led his people safely to their new home.
Once in Canaan, Abraham became a wealthy man. He acquired flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and a large household staff. He also gained a reputation as a great warrior, defeating four kings who had attacked Sodom and Gomorrah.
When Isaac was born, Abraham was one hundred years old. God then asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a test of his faith. Abraham passed the test, and was rewarded with many more years of life. He died at the age of one hundred seventy-five.
Abraham was a great man who is remembered for his faithfulness to God. He is an important figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
