Born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 30, 1970, Walter Emanuel Jones was the youngest of five children. His father, Walter Sr., was a businessman, and his mother, Carolyn Jones, was a homemaker. Walter Jr. began his acting career at the age of six, when he appeared in a local production of The Wiz. He later studied dance at the Detroit School of Arts, where he met future Power Rangers co-star Amy Jo Johnson.

Jones has been married twice. His first marriage, to actress Tammie Fuller, ended in divorce. He is currently married to his second wife, Jennifer Freeman. The couple has two daughters together.
