William Butler Yeats was born on 13 June 1865, in Sandymount, County Dublin, Ireland. His father, John Butler Yeats, was a barrister and his mother, Susan Mary Pollexfen, was the daughter of a wealthy merchant. William was the second of four children, with an elder sister, Lily, and two younger brothers, Jack and Edward. The family moved frequently, living in various parts of Ireland before settling in London in 1887. William was educated at a number of schools, including the Godolphin School in Hammersmith and the Erasmus Smith High School in Dublin. He began writing poetry at an early age and was published in the Dublin University Review while still a student.

Yeats’ early career was shaped by the Irish Literary Revival, a movement that sought to promote Irish culture and language. He co-founded the Rhymers’ Club, a group of poets who met regularly to discuss their work, and in 1892 he published his first collection of poems, The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems. The following year he co-founded the Irish National Theatre Society with Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn. Yeats’ play The Countess Cathleen was performed by the Society in 1899.

Yeats’ career reached a new level of success in the early 1900s. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923 and was appointed to the Senate of the Irish Free State in 1922. He served as a Senator until 1928. Yeats continued to write poetry and plays throughout his life. His later works include The Tower (1928), a collection of poems about Ireland during the Irish Civil War, and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1933), a collection of love poems.

Yeats died on 28 January 1939, at the age of 73. His body was cremated and his ashes were buried in Drumcliffe Churchyard in County Sligo, Ireland.

Yeats is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. His work has had a profound influence on literature and culture both in Ireland and around the world.
