Tommy Lasorda is an American former professional baseball pitcher and manager. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
Lasorda was born on September 22, 1927, in Norristown, Pennsylvania. His parents, Sabatino and Carmella Lasorda, were both Italian immigrants. He has two older sisters, Millie and Marie. Lasorda was raised Catholic and attended St. Mary’s Parochial School.
Lasorda’s professional baseball career began in 1945, when he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played minor league baseball for several years before being called up to the Phillies’ major league roster in 1954. He pitched one season for the Phillies before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1955.
Lasorda spent the next 14 years with the Dodgers, first as a player and then as a coach. He was named the Dodgers’ manager in 1976 and led the team to two World Series titles (1981 and 1988). He retired from managing after the 1996 season.
Lasorda’s career record as a manager is 1,599-1,439. He was named National League Manager of the Year four times (1983, 1985, 1988, and 1995).

Lasorda has been married twice. His first wife, Jo Lasorda, died in 1971. His second wife, Peggy Russell, whom he married in 1972, survives him. He has two daughters from his first marriage, Laura and Toni Lasorda.
Lasorda was hospitalized in November 2012 for a heart attack. He underwent open-heart surgery and was released from the hospital in December 2012.
