Timothy George is an American historian and theologian. He is the founding dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University and a senior editor of Christianity Today. He also serves as the general editor of The Reformation Commentary on Scripture.
George was born in 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John and Margaret George. He has two sisters, Mary and Nancy. He was raised in a devoutly Christian home and attended Philadelphia public schools.
He earned his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1974 and his M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1977. He also holds a Ph.D. in church history from Harvard University (1982).
George’s academic career began as a faculty member at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (1982-84). He then served as a visiting professor at Harvard Divinity School (1984-85) before joining the faculty of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he has taught since 1985.
George is a prolific writer and respected scholar of church history and theology. He is the author or editor of more than 40 books, including Theology of the Reformers (1988), Reading Scripture with the Reformers (2003), and The Faith of the Early Fathers (2003). He has also written numerous articles for academic journals and popular magazines such as Christianity Today and First Things.
George is married to Denise George, a former missionary to Japan. They have two grown children, John and Sarah.
George’s work has been honored with several awards, including the Grawemeyer Award in Religion (2000) and the John M. Templeton Foundation Award for Theological Promise (1985). He was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006.
