Terry McMillan is an American author. She was born on October 18, 1951, in Port Huron, Michigan. Her parents were both African American. She has two sisters. McMillan was educated at the University of California, Berkeley. She began her career as a journalist, but soon turned to writing fiction. Her first novel, Mama, was published in 1987.

It was an instant bestseller. McMillan’s other novels include Waiting to Exhale (1992) and How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1996). Both of these books were made into successful movies. McMillan has also written a memoir, I Almost Forgot About You (2016). She is currently working on a new novel. McMillan’s novels often deal with the lives of African American women.

She is known for her frank and honest portrayal of her characters. McMillan has won several awards for her work, including the American Book Award and the NAACP Image Award. She was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. McMillan is divorced and has two grown children.
