Stephen Gyllenhaal is an American director and screenwriter. He is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and producer Naomi Foner. Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and producer Naomi Foner. His father is a Swedish-born American, and his mother is Jewish. He has two sisters, Maggie and Jake, and a brother, Jackson. Gyllenhaal was raised in a “liberal household” and attended the Harvard-Westlake School. He began acting at the age of ten, making his film debut in City Slickers (1991), followed by roles in A Dangerous Woman (1993) and Homegrown (1998).
He also appeared in the films October Sky (1999) and Donnie Darko (2001). Gyllenhaal’s performance in Donnie Darko earned him a Satellite Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 2002, he starred in the independent film The Good Girl, opposite Jennifer Aniston, and in the blockbuster Spider-Man (2002). Gyllenhaal’s breakout role came in 2004, when he played Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In 2005, he starred in the independent film Jarhead, directed by Sam Mendes.
He also appeared in the films Proof (2005), World Trade Center (2006), Zodiac (2007), Love & Other Drugs (2010), End of Watch (2012), Enemy (2013), Prisoners (2013), Nightcrawler (2014), Southpaw (2015), Demolition (2015), Okja (2017), Wildlife (2018), and Velvet Buzzsaw (2019). Gyllenhaal has been nominated for two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, three BAFTA Awards, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. He has also received two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, two Satellite Awards, and a Hollywood Film Award.
