Shannon Hoon was born on September 26, 1967, in Lafayette, Indiana. His parents were both teachers. He has two older sisters. Hoon was a good student and was active in sports and music. He played football and was a member of the school band. After high school, Hoon attended San Francisco State University. He dropped out after a year to pursue a career in music.
Hoon was the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Blind Melon. The band’s debut album, Blind Melon, was released in 1992. The album’s first single, “Bee Girl”, was a minor hit. The band’s second album, Soup, was released in 1995. The album’s first single, “No Rain”, became a huge hit, reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band’s third album, Nico, was released in 1996.
Hoon struggled with drug addiction for much of his life. He died of a drug overdose on October 21, 1995, at the age of 28.
