Deep gravelly growling voice which he puts to good use in roles as villains and authority figures.
Fact
Has played two characters with the surname 'Querns'. The first was in Oz (1997), where Martin Querns managed the Emerald City unit of the penitentiary. The second appearance was as a defense attorney Barry Querns in the opening two-part episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999)'s 14th season. It is never mentioned whether or not these characters are the same, or rather a simple character reference.
Reg E. Cathey was an American actor. He was born in Huntsville, Alabama, on August 18, 1958, to father Reginald E. Cathey Sr. and mother Helen (née Harris) Cathey. His father worked as a technical illustrator for the U.S. Army, while his mother was a homemaker. He had two older sisters, Pamela and Regina. He attended J.O. Johnson High School, where he was a member of the drama club. After graduation, he studied at the University of Michigan, where he earned a BFA in theater arts.
Cathey began his acting career in the early 1980s, appearing in regional theater productions. He made his television debut in an episode of the NBC police procedural drama Hill Street Blues in 1982. He went on to have guest roles on a number of popular television shows in the 1980s and 1990s, including Miami Vice, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Homicide: Life on the Street, and The Wire. He had a recurring role as Dr. Franklin Storm in the Fantastic Four animated series from 1994 to 1996.
Cathey’s film credits include Fletch Lives (1989), Clear and Present Danger (1994), The Mask (1994), Se7en (1995), The Rock (1996), and Fantastic Four (2005). He won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Norman Wilson in The Wire in 2008.
Cathey died of lung cancer on February 9, 2018, at the age of 59.
Cathey was married to actress Dora Jean-Baptiste from 1988 to 2001. They had two children together: a son, Reginald Jr., and a daughter, Analisa. Cathey was also survived by his partner of 15 years, actress Stefanie Black.
