Phyllis Ayame Whitney (born September 9, 1903) is an American writer of more than 70 mystery novels. She received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1985.
Whitney was born in Yokohama, Japan, the daughter of American parents. Her father was a businessman and her mother was a schoolteacher. Whitney’s family moved to the United States when she was two years old, and she was raised in New Jersey. She graduated from Smith College in 1925.
Whitney began her writing career as a journalist for The New York Times. She later worked as an editor for Cosmopolitan magazine and as a Hollywood script reader. Her first novel, Black Amber, was published in 1942.
Whitney’s novels are often set in exotic locations, such as Japan, India, and the Caribbean. Her characters are often strong-willed women who find themselves in dangerous situations.
Whitney was married to businessman Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney from 1932 until his death in 1992. The couple had three children: Phyllis, Timothy, and Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney II.
