Peggy Fleming (born July 27, 1948) is an American former figure skater. She is the 1968 Olympic Champion in Ladies’ Singles and a three-time World Champion (1966–1968). Fleming has been described as “America’s first lady of skating” and “the face of American skating”.
Fleming was born in San Jose, California, the only child of Al and Doris Fleming. Her father had been a nationally ranked tennis player and her mother was a housewife. Fleming began skating at the age of nine when her father took her to the San Jose Civic Auditorium to see an exhibition by two-time Olympic pairs champions Barbara Ann Scott and Dick Button.
At the age of thirteen, Fleming won the novice title at the 1961 U.S. Championships. She then moved up to the junior level and won the U.S. Junior title in 1963. In 1964, she placed fourth at the World Junior Championships.
Fleming made her senior debut at the 1965 U.S. Championships, where she placed sixth. The following year, she won her first national title and also became the first American woman to land a triple loop in competition. She went on to win the World Championship in 1966 and 1968.
In 1968, Fleming won the Olympic gold medal in Grenoble, France, becoming the first American woman to do so since Carol Heiss in 1960. Her victory was considered a “come-from-behind” win as she was fourth after the compulsory figures portion of the event and third going into the free skate.
After her Olympic triumph, Fleming turned professional and toured with Ice Capades for several years. She also made numerous television appearances, including guest spots on The Carol Burnett Show and The Ed Sullivan Show. In 1969, she starred in her own television special, Peggy Fleming Skates to a Gold Medal.
In 1986, Fleming was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. She made a full recovery and has since been an outspoken advocate for early detection and treatment of the disease.
In 2006, Fleming was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. She currently works as a commentator for NBC Sports’ figure skating coverage.
Fleming has been married to physician Greg Jenkins since 1970. They have two children: a son, Andrew, and a daughter, Kelly.
Fleming’s net worth is estimated to be $5 million.
