Nina Hagen is a German singer, songwriter, and actress. She is known for her theatrical vocals and rose to prominence during the punk and new wave movements in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her debut album, Nina Hagen Band, was released in 1978 to critical acclaim. She has since released several albums and collaborated with a number of artists.
Hagen was born in the former East Berlin, East Germany, on March 11, 1955. Her mother, Eva-Maria Hagen, was a singer and actress, and her father, Hans Oliva-Hagen, was a writer. She has two sisters, Maria and Manuela. Hagen’s parents divorced when she was four and she was raised by her mother. She began her career as a child actress, appearing in a number of German films.
Hagen’s musical career began when she formed the Nina Hagen Band in 1977. The band released their debut album, Nina Hagen Band, the following year. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one in Germany. Hagen’s second album, Unbehagen, was released in 1979. It was also successful, reaching number two in Germany.
In 1982, Hagen released her third album, Fearless. The album was a commercial success, reaching the top ten in several countries. Hagen’s fourth album, Angstlos, was released in 1984. It was another commercial success, reaching the top five in Germany.
In 1989, Hagen released her fifth album, Nina Hagen in Ekstasy. The album was a commercial success, reaching the top ten in several countries.
Hagen has since released several more albums, including Return of the Mother (1996), Revolution Ballroom (1998), and Personal Jesus (2004). She has also collaborated with a number of artists, including David Bowie, Prince, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Hagen has been married three times and has four children. She currently resides in Berlin, Germany.
