Nathan East is an American bass player, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He holds the distinction of being the first African-American member of the rock band Toto, and has played on numerous recordings with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, and George Harrison.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 8, 1955, East comes from a musical family. His father was a jazz trumpet player, and his mother was a gospel singer. East began playing the bass guitar at the age of 14. He attended San Diego State University on a music scholarship, and later transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles to study jazz.
East’s career began in the early 1980s when he was asked to join Toto by the band’s keyboardist, David Paich. With Toto, East has recorded on such albums as Toto IV (1982), which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and Fahrenheit (1986). He has also toured with the band extensively, including a world tour in support of Toto IV.
In addition to his work with Toto, East has recorded and performed with a wide range of artists as a session musician. He can be heard on Eric Clapton’s album August (1986), Lionel Richie’s Can’t Slow Down (1983), and Michael Jackson’s Bad (1987). He has also worked with Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Herbie Hancock, Phil Collins, and many others.
As a solo artist, East has released three albums: Nathan East (2014), Reverence (2016), and Reconnection (2018). He has also been a member of the supergroup Fourplay since 1991.
East has been married to his wife Maricar since 1985. The couple have three children together.
