The Time was a key part of the Minneapolis sound, a blend of funk and dance music that also included artists such as Prince, Sheila E., and Jesse Johnson. The Time had several hits in the early 1980s, including “Get It Up” and “The Bird.” Day also appeared in several films, including Purple Rain (1984) and Graffiti Bridge (1990).
Day was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on December 13, 1957. His father, Mervin, was a musician, and his mother, Vivian, was a homemaker. Day has four siblings: two brothers, Marvin Jr. and Monte, and two sisters, Michele and Maureen. Day’s father exposed him to music at an early age, and he began playing drums when he was just five years old. He later took up guitar and piano. Day attended Central High School in Minneapolis. After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota, but he dropped out after one semester to pursue a career in music.
Day co-founded The Time with Prince protégé Jimmy Jam in 1981. The band quickly became a key part of the Minneapolis sound, thanks to their blend of funk and dance music. The Time had several hits in the early 1980s, including “Get It Up” and “The Bird.” Day also appeared in several films, including Purple Rain (1984) and Graffiti Bridge (1990).
In the 1990s, Day embarked on a solo career. He released his debut album, It’s About Time, in 1996. The album featured the single “Sexy Socialite.” Day’s second album, Guaranteed, was released in 2001. The album’s title track was a duet with R&B singer Tweet. Day has also appeared on several television shows, including The Jamie Foxx Show and New York Undercover.
Day has been married twice. His first marriage was to L Morris in 1984. The couple divorced in 1990. Day married his second wife, Julie Larson, in 2002. The couple has two children: a son, Morris Jr., and a daughter, Mimi.
