Mildred’s early education took place in a one-room schoolhouse near her home. She later attended Ladora High School, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class.
Mildred’s love of writing began at an early age. When she was just eight years old, she wrote and published her first story in a local newspaper. After high school, she attended the University of Iowa, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English. It was during her time at the university that Mildred began writing articles for children’s magazines.
In 1926, Mildred’s first book for children, “The Secret of the Cave,” was published. She would go on to write more than two dozen books for children, including the popular “Nancy Drew” series. In addition to her work as an author, Mildred also worked as a journalist and a teacher.
