Mary Matalin is an American political consultant, commentator, author, and television producer. She is known for her work on the presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Trump. Matalin also served as the Assistant to the President and Counselor to the Vice President in the George W. Bush administration.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 19, 1953, Matalin was raised in a family of Democrats. Her father, Michael, was a police officer, and her mother, Anne, was a homemaker. Matalin has two sisters and one brother. She attended Immaculate Conception Academy, a Catholic girls’ high school, before enrolling at Western Illinois University.
Matalin began her career as a volunteer on the 1972 presidential campaign of Democrat George McGovern. She later worked on the campaigns of Republicans Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Dick Cheney. In 1992, she served as the deputy campaign manager for Cheney’s unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
In the George W. Bush administration, Matalin served as the Assistant to the President and Counselor to the Vice President. She resigned from her position in 2003.
Matalin is married to Democratic political consultant James Carville. The couple has two daughters.
