Mary Elizabeth Aitcheson Gore was born on November 16, 1948, in Washington, D.C., the second child of Albert Gore Sr., then a U.S. Representative from Tennessee, and his wife, Pauline LaFon Gore. Gore has an older sister, Nancy, and a younger brother, Albert Jr., who would later become Vice President of the United States. As a child, Gore was interested in both writing and politics; she would go on to become an author and an environmental activist.

Gore attended St. Albans School, an elite private school in Washington, D.C., before going to college at Harvard University. She graduated from Harvard in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. After graduation, Gore took a job as an editorial assistant at Ms. magazine. She later worked as a journalist for The New York Times and The Washington Post.

In 1977, Gore married Bill Bradley, a former professional basketball player and U.S. Senator from New Jersey. The couple had three children: Karenna, Kristin, and Andrew. Gore and Bradley divorced in 1996.

In 2000, Gore ran for the U.S. Senate from Tennessee, but lost the election to Republican Lamar Alexander.

Since leaving the Senate race, Gore has focused on her work as an environmental activist. She is the founder and chair of The Climate Reality Project, an organization that works to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change and promote solutions to the problem. Gore is also a member of the board of directors of the Environmental Defense Fund.

In 2007, Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, for their “efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.”

Gore has an estimated net worth of $200 million.

5Eating disorders can have serious medical and psychological consequences which, left unchecked, can kill. Parents should address this issue and ask their children to discuss how they feel about themselves.
6It was an idea we had when Al was in the Senate - to organize and moderate an annual conference that would look at government policy through the lens of the family to help identify ways that the family can be supported and strengthened.
7Past conference topics have included strengthening the role of fathers in children's lives, the impact of the media culture on children, the delicate balance between work and family, and family involvement in education.
8You're talking to someone who really understands rock music.
9Our society's strong emphasis on dieting and self-image can sometimes lead to eating disorders. We know that more than 5 million Americans suffer from eating disorders, most of them young women.
10As an avid photographer, I also took advantage of the latest technology in photography - digital photography - to post photos on my website on a daily basis.
11I have long recognized a link between fitness and mental health and I think we need to encourage young people to take part in sports and team activities because we know it has such positive results.
