Lydia Lunch is an American singer, songwriter, poet, and actress. She was born in Rochester, New York, on June 2, 1959, to parents who were both artists. Her father was a jazz musician and her mother was a painter. Lunch began her career as a teenager, performing in various punk and new wave bands in New York City. She first gained notoriety as the lead singer of the band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, which was active from 1976 to 1979. After the band’s breakup, Lunch embarked on a solo career, releasing her debut album, Queen of Siam, in 1980. She has since released more than a dozen albums, both solo and with various collaborators.
Lunch is also known for her work as an actress, appearing in films such as Richard Kern’s The Right Side of My Brain (1985) and Alex Cox’s Repo Man (1984). She has also directed two films: the short film The Color of Blood (1984) and the documentary Who Killed Nancy Spungen? (1998).
In addition to her work as a musician and actress, Lunch is also a writer and poet. She has published several books of poetry and prose, including the collection Paradoxia: A Predator’s Diary (2007).
