Lucas was raised in a Catholic family and attended Modesto Junior College before transferring to the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

Lucas began his career working as a cameraman on various films and television shows. In 1971, he co-wrote and directed the film THX 1138, which was not a commercial success but garnered critical acclaim. Lucas then wrote and directed American Graffiti (1973), which was a massive hit, grossing over $140 million worldwide.

In 1977, Lucas wrote and directed Star Wars, which became one of the most successful films of all time, grossing over $460 million worldwide. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Director for Lucas.

Lucas continued to work on Star Wars sequels and prequels over the next few decades. In 1999, he returned to directing with Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The film was a commercial success but was met with mixed reviews from critics.

Lucas has a net worth of $5.4 billion as of 2020. He has been married twice: first to Marcia Lucas from 1969 to 1983, with whom he has three children; and second to Mellody Hobson, with whom he has one child.
