Lou Adler is an American record producer and film director who has produced and co-produced some of the most successful albums of all time, including The Mamas and the Papas’ debut album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears and Carole King’s Tapestry. Adler has also directed films such as Up in Smoke, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on December 10, 1933, Adler was the only child of Jewish immigrants from Romania. His father, Simon, was a tailor, and his mother, Sarah, was a homemaker. Adler grew up in the Bronx, New York and attended DeWitt Clinton High School. He began his career in the music industry as a songwriter for the Brill Building songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Adler’s first hit song was “Hound Dog”, which he co-wrote with Leiber and Stoller for Elvis Presley.

Adler’s first foray into record production came with the release of The Mamas and the Papas’ debut album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears in 1966. The album was an instant success, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawning the hit singles “California Dreamin'” and “Monday, Monday”. Adler went on to produce several more albums for The Mamas and the Papas, including 1967’s Deliver and 1968’s The Papas & The Mamas.

In 1971, Adler produced Carole King’s landmark album Tapestry, which became the best-selling album of all time by a female artist. Tapestry won four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Adler has also had success as a film director. His films Up in Smoke (1978) and Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie (1980) were both box office hits. Adler also directed The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), which has become a cult classic.

Adler has been married three times. His first wife was Shelley Fabares, with whom he had one daughter, Nicole. His second wife was Page Hannah, with whom he had two sons, Matthew and Cody. Adler has been married to his third wife, actress/singer Lynda Kay, since 1984.
