Early Life

Schlessinger was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised on Long Island. She is the only child of Yolanda (née Levine), a homemaker, and Morris Schlessinger, an electrical engineer. She has stated that she was raised in a “very strict, very traditional Jewish household” and that her father was “an extremely strict man, very moral, very ethical.”

Schlessinger attended New York University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in physiology in 1969. She then attended the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she earned a medical degree in 1974.

Career

After completing her medical training, Schlessinger began working as a doctor in a hospital emergency room. She soon became dissatisfied with the work, feeling that she was not able to help her patients as much as she wanted to. In 1976, she began working as a marriage and family counselor.

In 1980, Schlessinger began hosting a call-in radio show on KFI in Los Angeles. The show was originally intended to be about parenting, but Schlessinger soon began giving advice on a wide range of topics. The show became popular, and in 1983 it began airing nationally.

In 1995, Schlessinger caused controversy when she made comments on her radio show that were critical of homosexuality. She later apologized for the comments.

In 2010, Schlessinger announced that she would be ending her radio show at the end of the year. She said that she wanted to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests.

In 2012, Schlessinger returned to radio with a new show on Sirius XM Radio.

Personal Life

Schlessinger has been married three times. Her first marriage ended in divorce after four years. Her second marriage, to Lew Bishop, lasted 17 years and ended in divorce in 2010. She has been married to Dr. Drew Pinsky since 2015.

Schlessinger has three children from her second marriage: Deryk, Tyler, and Alexandra. She also has a stepson from her third marriage.

Physical Characteristics

Schlessinger is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes.
