Kurt Browning, CC, is a retired Canadian figure skater. He is a four-time World Champion and four-time Canadian National Champion. Browning is credited with having popularized a number of skating elements, including the first successful quadruple jump in competition, which he executed at the 1988 World Championships.
Browning was born on June 18, 1966, in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada. His parents were both schoolteachers. Browning has two older sisters. His early education took place in Rocky Mountain House.
Browning began skating at the age of three. His first coach was his mother. He later began taking lessons from former Olympic pairs skater Paul Wylie in Calgary. It was Wylie who encouraged Browning to pursue a career in single skating.
Browning made his World Championship debut in 1986, finishing sixth. He won his first World Championship title in 1987, becoming the first Canadian man to do so since Donald Jackson in 1962. Browning successfully defended his title in 1988 and 1989.
In 1990, Browning became the first skater to land a quadruple jump in competition, at the World Championships in Munich. He went on to win his fourth World Championship title in 1991.
Browning competed at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, finishing fourth. He retired from competitive skating following the 1992 season.
Browning has skated in numerous professional shows and exhibitions over the years. He has also served as a skating coach and choreographer. In 2012, he was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
Browning has been married twice. His first marriage, to Sonia Rodriguez, ended in divorce. He has two children from that marriage, a son and a daughter. His second marriage is to Sonia Rodriguez-Nava, a former Mexican figure skater. The couple has one son together.
Browning stands five feet eight inches tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes.
