She was born on February 13, 1968 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Juanita Perez, a housewife, and Herbert Hu, a salesman and racecar driver. She has four brothers and one sister. Hu attended Maʻemaʻe Elementary School and Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu. She then studied drama at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and graduated in 1990 with a BFA degree in acting.
Hu began her career as a fashion model in Asia and came to Los Angeles in 1991 to pursue an acting career. She landed her first acting role in the television series Growing Pains in 1992. She has since appeared in numerous television shows and films, including Nash Bridges, The Scorpion King, X2: X-Men United, Cradle 2 the Grave, The Tournament, and Arrow.
Hu has won several awards for her work, including an MTV Movie Award, an Asian Excellence Award, and a Teen Choice Award. She was also nominated for a Saturn Award.
