Kathleen Hanna is an American singer, songwriter, musician, artist, and feminist activist. She is best known as the lead singer of the punk rock band Bikini Kill, and later as the frontwoman of the dance-punk duo Le Tigre. In 1998, Hanna started the solo project Julie Ruin, which released its debut album Run Fast in 2013.
Hanna was born on November 12, 1968, in Portland, Oregon, to parents Julie and Leonard Hanna. She has two older sisters, Amy and Gina. Hanna’s parents divorced when she was three years old, and she and her sisters were raised by their mother. Hanna’s mother is a feminist and her father is an environmentalist.
Hanna began her musical career in the early 1990s with the punk rock band Bikini Kill. The band was known for their radical feminist lyrics and their DIY approach to music and politics. Bikini Kill released three albums between 1991 and 1996, and Hanna’s powerful vocals and stage presence made her a punk icon.
In 1997, Hanna and fellow Bikini Kill member Tobi Vail formed the dance-punk duo Le Tigre. The band released three albums between 1999 and 2005, and Hanna’s work with Le Tigre helped to popularize the electroclash genre.
In 1998, Hanna started the solo project Julie Ruin. The project’s debut album, Run Fast, was released in 2013. The album was critically acclaimed, and Hanna’s songwriting and musicianship were praised.
Hanna has been active in the feminist movement since the early 1990s. She is a founding member of the Riot Grrrl movement, and she has been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and gender equality.
Hanna is married to Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys. The couple have one daughter, born in 2015.
