Jonny Lang (born Jon Gordon Langseth Jr., on January 29, 1981) is an American blues, gospel, and rock singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist. Lang’s music is notable for its electric guitar solos and soulful sound. His vocal style has been compared to that of a young Stevie Wonder.
Lang was born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota. His father is a blues and gospel musician, and his mother is a singer. He has four sisters and one brother. Lang began playing the guitar at the age of twelve. He was influenced by blues artists such as B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Albert Collins. He also cites gospel singers such as Mahalia Jackson and Andraé Crouch as influences.
Lang’s first album, Lie to Me, was released in 1997 when he was sixteen years old. It was followed by the release of Wander This World in 1998. Lang’s third album, Long Time Coming, was released in 2003. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album.
Lang’s fourth album, Turn Around, was released in 2006. It peaked at #13 on the Billboard 200 chart and won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Lang’s fifth album, Fight for My Soul, was released in 2013.
Lang has toured with such artists as The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Buddy Guy, and Jeff Beck. He has also appeared on television shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Lang has been married to his wife, Hayley, since 2009. They have two daughters together.
