John Starks was born on August 10, 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His parents were John and Shirley Starks. He has two sisters, Cheryl and Pamela. Starks was a stand-out athlete from an early age. He played football, basketball, and track in high school. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship. However, he was forced to leave school after a year due to financial difficulties.

Starks began his professional basketball career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He was eventually signed by the New York Knicks in 1990.
