John Starks was born on August 10, 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His parents were John and Shirley Starks. He has two sisters, Cheryl and Pamela. Starks was a stand-out athlete from an early age. He played football, basketball, and track in high school. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship. However, he was forced to leave school after a year due to financial difficulties.
Starks began his professional basketball career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He was eventually signed by the New York Knicks in 1990. He quickly became a fan favorite due to his hard-nosed style of play. He was named an All-Star in 1993 and helped lead the Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1994.
During his time with the Knicks, Starks developed a reputation as a volatile player. He was often involved in on-court altercations with opponents and teammates alike. In 1998, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He spent one season with the Warriors before being released.
Starks then had brief stints with the Chicago Bulls and the Houston Rockets. He retired from the NBA in 2002.
