John Smith (explorer) was born in England in 1580. His parents were farmers who died when he was a young boy. He was educated in a local school and then apprenticed to a merchant. He later became a soldier and fought in the Low Countries and France. In 1606, he led an expedition to Virginia in North America.

He explored the Chesapeake Bay and the rivers that flow into it. He also established the first English colony in Virginia at Jamestown. Smith was captured by Native Americans in 1608 and held for ransom. He was released after he agreed to marry Pocahontas, the daughter of the chief of the Powhatan tribe.

Smith returned to England in 1609 and wrote a book about his experiences in Virginia. He returned to North America in 1614 and explored the coast of New England. He died in 1631. ..
