John Dickinson was born on November 2, 1732, in Talbot County, Maryland. His parents were Samuel Dickinson and Mary Cadwalader. His father was a landowner and a judge, and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy family. Dickinson had six siblings: four brothers and two sisters. He was educated at home by tutors and then attended the Philadelphia Academy (now the University of Pennsylvania). He also studied law with John Moland and was admitted to the bar in 1754.

Dickinson’s career began as a lawyer, but he soon became involved in politics. He was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress in 1765 and a member of the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776. He was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Dickinson served in the Pennsylvania legislature from 1776 to 1780 and was governor of Pennsylvania from 1782 to 1785. He retired from public life in 1786 but returned to politics in 1787, when he was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. Dickinson is best known for his writings, which were very influential in the development of American democracy.
