Fact | After her parents divorced, she changed her last name to Jett, her mother's maiden name. |
Joan Jett is an American rock singer, songwriter, composer, musician, record producer and occasional actress. She is best known for her work with the band Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, including their hit single “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”, which was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 from March 20 to May 1, 1982, as well as for their other popular singles “Crimson and Clover”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me?”, “Light of Day”, “Fake Friends” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You”.
Jett has a mezzo-soprano vocal range. She has three albums that have been certified Platinum or Gold, and has been a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 2015. She has been described as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Born in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, Joan Jett is the eldest of three children. Her father, James Jett, was a Vietnam War veteran and her mother, Dorothy Jett (née Connors), was a homemaker. She has two younger siblings: a brother, James Jett Jr., and a sister, Michele Jett.
Jett was attracted to rock music at an early age. When she was thirteen years old, she bought her first album, Alice Cooper’s School’s Out. She began playing guitar and formed a band with some friends called The Runaways. The band released their first album in 1976. They were popular in Japan but less so in the United States. They broke up in 1979.
In 1980, Jett formed her own band, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Their first album, Bad Reputation, was released in 1981. It was followed by 1982’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, which included the hit single of the same name. The album went to number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
Jett has appeared in a number of films and television shows over the years. She had a small role in the film Light of Day (1987) starring Michael J. Fox. She also appeared in episodes of the television series Miami Vice (1984) and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (1996).
Jett has been in a relationship with musician Kenny Laguna since 1982. They live together in Laguna Beach, California.
Jett is a vegetarian and an animal rights activist. She has two cats: Mr. T and Snickers.
As of 2021, Joan Jett’s net worth is estimated to be $7 million dollars.

Quotes
# | Quote |
---|---|
1 | [on her refusal to appear in Edgeplay: A film about the Runaways] To me, the Runaways is my baby, so you have to understand my perspective. If there's gonna be a Runaways movie, it should be about what we accomplished, the tours we did, the bands we played with, the people we inspired. I'm not gonna participate in a Jerry Springer fest, bottom line. With any band, you're gonna have interpersonal conflicts, but if that's what they thought the Runaways were about, about breaking a bass or putting on make-up, well, it's very disappointing. Very, very disappointing. I wanted nothing to do with it because that's not the band I was in. [The film] was a totally different take on what went down. |
2 | I don't want to lessen my own achievements, but it's just not that difficult [to play in a band]. If you're in good health and like to travel, I don't see why more women don't automatically want to do it. |
3 | I think there's nothing better than seeing a three-chord straight up rock 'n' roll band in your face with sweaty music and three minute good songs. |
4 | [When asked what would people find unique about her] That I'm not mean. |
5 | [on the symbolism of two of her tattoos in Budget Living magazine] The triangle on my chest represents the divinity of myself and others. The band around my arm represents the creative essence of life in a swirl of positive and negative forces. |
