Jill Sobule is an American singer-songwriter best known for her 1995 hit single “I Kissed a Girl”, which was one of the first mainstream songs to deal with lesbianism. She has released eight studio albums, including two on major labels. Sobule has also written songs for film and television, including the theme song for the 1999 film “Girl, Interrupted”.

Born in Denver, Colorado, on December 16, 1961, Sobule was raised in a Jewish family. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a schoolteacher. She has two older sisters. Sobule was educated at the Cherry Creek High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she studied English and creative writing.

Sobule began her musical career in the early 1980s, playing in clubs in Los Angeles. She released her self-titled debut album in 1992, followed by “Things Here Are Different” (1994) and “Pink Pearl” (1995). “I Kissed a Girl” was a Top 40 hit in the United States and also charted in several other countries. Sobule’s other well-known songs include “Supermodel” (1995), “Stupid Girl” (1996) and “I Will Survive” (1997).

In the 2000s, Sobule moved away from the major label system, releasing her albums “The Folk Years” (2003) and “California Years” (2005) on her own label, Lazy Meadow Music. She continued to tour regularly and released a live album, “Live at McCabe’s Guitar Shop” (2007). In 2010, Sobule crowdfunded her seventh studio album, “The California Years”, through Kickstarter. The album was released to positive reviews.

Sobule’s eighth studio album, “Dottie’s Charms”, was released in 2015. The album was produced by Joe Henry and features guest appearances by Jackson Browne and Ani DiFranco.

Sobule has been open about her bisexuality throughout her career. In 2000, she came out as a lesbian in an interview with The Advocate magazine. She has been in a relationship with Melanie Hutsell since 2002.

Sobule has a net worth of $3 million. She has earned most of her wealth from her successful music career. She has released eight studio albums, including two on major labels. Sobule has also written songs for film and television, including the theme song for the 1999 film “Girl, Interrupted”.
