Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan is an Indian actress and politician. She is widely regarded as one of the most successful actresses in the history of Hindi cinema. She has appeared in over 70 Hindi films in a career spanning more than four decades. In addition to her acting career, Bachchan has also worked as a playback singer, film producer and television presenter. She has been a member of the Indian Parliament since 2004, representing the Samajwadi Party.

Early Life

Jaya Bhaduri was born on April 9, 1948, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. Her father, Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, was a Bengali writer, journalist and poet. Her mother, Indira Bhaduri, was a homemaker. She has two sisters, Bharati and Rupa.

Bachchan received her early education at the Loreto Convent School in Kolkata. She later attended the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.

Bachchan made her acting debut in the Bengali film Mahanagar (1963). She later appeared in the Hindi films Guddi (1971), Jawani Diwani (1972) and Zanjeer (1973). These films established her as a leading actress in Hindi cinema.

In 1975, Bachchan starred in the blockbuster film Sholay. She went on to appear in several successful films including Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001) and Black (2005).

Bachchan has also worked as a playback singer and film producer. She has sung songs for films such as Parichay (1972) and Kora Kagaz (1974). She has produced films such as Mrityudaata (1997) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003).

In 2004, Bachchan was elected to the Indian Parliament from the Samajwadi Party. She has since been re-elected three times.

Personal Life

Bachchan married actor Amitabh Bachchan in 1973. The couple have two children, Shweta and Abhishek.

In 2000, Bachchan was diagnosed with breast cancer. She successfully underwent treatment and has been cancer-free since 2001.
