Jane was born in Berkeley, California, on October 28, 1962. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, and she was raised by her mother, a psychotherapist. She has two older sisters.
Jane attended high school in Berkeley, and then went on to study acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. She began her career appearing in regional theater productions, before moving to Los Angeles in the early 1990s to pursue a career in television and film.
Jane’s breakout role came in 1994, when she was cast as Ross Geller’s ex-wife Carol Willick on the NBC sitcom Friends. She appeared in a total of 17 episodes over the course of the show’s 10-year run.
Since Friends ended in 2004, Jane has appeared in a number of TV shows and movies, including How I Met Your Mother, The Starter Wife, and Desperate Housewives. She has also done voice work for animated shows such as The Simpsons and American Dad!
Jane is married to actor Brad Hall, with whom she has two children.
