He has also won the WWE Tag Team Championship a record ten times – with Matt Hardy as part of The Hardy Boyz and with Shannon Moore and Gregory Helms as part of Team Xtreme. Within WWE, Hardy is regarded as one of the world’s greatest high-flyers.
Outside of WWE, Hardy has competed for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), Ring of Honor (ROH), and various independent promotions, including Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) and Full Impact Pro (FIP). He is a former TNA World Heavyweight Champion, a two-time TNA World Tag Team Champion, and a one-time TNA X Division Champion. He is also a former ROH World Tag Team Champion.
Hardy was born in Cameron, North Carolina, the son of Ruby Moore Hardy and Gilbert Hardy. He is the younger brother of Matt Hardy. Their mother died of brain cancer in 1986, when Hardy was nine. He developed an interest in motocross aged 12 and got his first bike, a Yamaha YZ-80, at age 13. He had his first race when he was 14 and finished fifth. He quickly began to improve his results and became a professional motocross racer at age 16. He was given the nickname “Surfer Boy” due to his love of surfing.
Hardy’s motocross career ended when he was injured while attempting a jump. He was then signed by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1994 after attending a WWF tryout camp. He was assigned to its developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). After being promoted to the main roster in 1998, he formed a tag team with Matt, known as The Hardy Boyz. Together, they gained notoriety in the tag team division for their extreme matches and ladder matches. They held the WWF Tag Team Championship a total of seven times before being traded to the SmackDown! brand in 2002.
In 2006, Hardy was drafted to the ECW brand, where he won the ECW Championship twice. The following year, he was traded back to SmackDown!, where he won the World Heavyweight Championship twice. In 2008, he won the WWE Championship at Armageddon, making him only the second wrestler (after Brock Lesnar) to hold all three WWE titles simultaneously. He held the WWE Championship for a second time in 2009, before losing it to Edge at The Bash.
Hardy left WWE in 2010 and signed with TNA. In his debut match for the company at Victory Road, he won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. He held the title for six months before losing it to Mr. Anderson at Sacrifice. Hardy returned to WWE in 2017 and has since won the United States Championship and Raw Tag Team Championship with his brother Matt.
Hardy has been married twice. His first marriage was to Beth Britt, which ended in divorce in March 2019. He has three children with Britt: twin sons Maxel and Wolfgang (born 2015) and a daughter named India (born 2017). Hardy’s second marriage is to Rebecca Reyes, with whom he has two daughters: Ruby Claire (born 2019) and Nera Quinn (born 2020).

In 2009, Hardy entered rehab for his addiction to pills and alcohol. In 2011, he was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after causing a disturbance on an airplane; he pleaded guilty to both charges and was fined $100 each.
