Casale was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 28, 1948. His father was an engineer and his mother was a homemaker. He has two older sisters. Casale’s interest in music began at an early age; he started playing the violin when he was five years old. He later took up the bass guitar, and played in a number of local bands in his teenage years.
Casale attended Kent State University, where he studied art and music. He met Bob Lewis, who would later become Devo’s manager, at a Kent State football game in 1966. Casale and Lewis began working on a number of art and music projects together, including the formation of the band Devo in 1974.
Devo’s first single, “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!”, was released in 1978 and became an underground hit. The band’s debut album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, was released later that year to critical acclaim. Devo’s second album, Freedom of Choice, was released in 1980 and featured the hit single “Whip It”.
Casale has continued to work with Devo throughout the band’s career, as well as pursuing a number of other musical projects. He has produced and directed music videos for a number of artists, including Duran Duran, Weezer and Soundgarden. He also worked on the soundtrack for the film The Breakfast Club.
Casale has been married twice; his first marriage ended in divorce, and he has two children from his second marriage. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

He sings lead vocals on several Devo songs, occasionally splitting lead vocal duties with Mark Mothersbaugh. He also plays bass guitar and keyboards while performing with the band.

He was the official co-leader of the group Devo, besides 'Mark Mothersbaugh', taking on a McCartney-Lennon/Richards-Jagger dynamic with Mark. Although Mark's contribution to the music may have been ultimately greater, Gerald was the hard-headed leader whom (for better or worse) was behind most of Devo's decisions and was arguably the loudest, most decisive voice regarding the artistic direction of the band. Gerald created most of the famous (sometimes infamous) costumes worn by the group, came up with most of the concept art for the band, directed many of their videos and took measures to obscure the group member's backgrounds to make they're uniform image all the more effective.
4
He was born with the last name Pizzute because his father, Bob, had legally changed his name (his birth name having been Robert Edward Casale) to that of his foster parents. Four years after Gerald's birth, his father changed his name back to his birth name.
5
His infatuation with "de-evolution" was fueled by the book "The Beginning Was the End" by Oscar Kiss Maerth. In the book (which doesn't have a single reference footnote), Maerth claims that human evolution was advanced by the cannibalistic practice of eating human brains. The title of the book was mentioned in the lyrics of the Devo song "Gates of Steel", and the jacket of their album "Now It Can Be Told" was modeled closely after the slipcover used for the USA printing of Maerth's book.
6
When he was going to Kent State, he was involved in the riots and protests of 1970 and saw many of his friends die when the National Guard began to shot down protestors. He later said that his idea that people were de-evolving began on that day.
