Feng Xiaogang is a Chinese film director, producer, screenwriter and actor. He is considered one of the most successful and prolific filmmakers in China. His films often combine comedy with drama and address social issues.
Feng was born on January 1, 1958, in Beijing, China. His father was a professor of Chinese literature and his mother was a homemaker. Feng has two older sisters. He was educated at the Beijing Film Academy, where he studied directing.
Feng’s career began in the 1980s, when he directed a number of films for state-run studios. His first film, “The Story of a Discharged Prisoner” (1987), was a critical and commercial success. Feng’s subsequent films include “Red Sorghum” (1987), “Ju Dou” (1990), “Raise the Red Lantern” (1991), “The Blue Kite” (1993), “To Live” (1994), “Farewell My Concubine” (1993) and “Cell Phone” (2003).
Feng has also produced and starred in a number of films, including “The Dream Factory” (1997), “Big Shot’s Funeral” (2001) and “Assembly” (2007).
Feng’s films have been both popular and critically acclaimed. “The Story of a Discharged Prisoner” won the Golden Rooster Award for Best Film, while “Red Sorghum” and “Farewell My Concubine” both won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Feng has also been nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on three occasions.
