Erin Brockovich is an American legal clerk and environmental activist, who, despite having no formal education in law, was instrumental in building a successful case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) of California in 1993. Her story was made into a film in 2000, starring Julia Roberts.
Brockovich was born Erin Elizabeth Pattee in Lawrence, Kansas, on June 22, 1960, the daughter of Betty Jo (née Davidson), a journalist, and Frank Pattee, an industrial engineer. She has two sisters, Jodie and Mary. She was raised in a Mormon household and attended San Diego State University, where she studied sociology and business administration.
Brockovich’s first job out of college was as a management trainee for Kmart, but she was soon fired for refusing to wear the required hot-pink polyester uniform. She then worked as a secretary for the law firm of Masry & Vititoe in Los Angeles, where she first became interested in environmental law.
In 1992, Brockovich was working as a file clerk in the firm when she was asked to help with a pro bono case against PG&E. The case alleged that PG&E had contaminated the drinking water of the town of Hinkley, California, with chromium-6. Brockovich’s research led her to discover that PG&E had been knowingly polluting the water for decades.
The case went to trial in 1993, and Brockovich served as an expert witness. The jury awarded the plaintiffs $333 million, the largest toxic tort injury settlement in U.S. history at that time.

Brockovich’s work on the case made her a household name, and she was portrayed by Julia Roberts in the 2000 film Erin Brockovich. Brockovich has since consulted on other environmental cases, including one against the U.S. Navy over contamination at the former Naval Air Station Alameda in California.
Brockovich is divorced from her first husband, Steven Brockovich, with whom she has three children: Matthew, Katie, and Elizabeth. She has been in a relationship with Eric Luedtke since 2001.
Brockovich is 5 feet 3 inches (1.60 m) tall and has blonde hair and blue eyes.
