John Henry “Doc” Holliday (August 14, 1851 – November 8, 1887) was an American gambler, gunfighter, and dentist, and a good friend of Wyatt Earp. He is best known for his role in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which took place in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, on October 26, 1881.
Born in Griffin, Georgia, Holliday was raised in a well-to-do family. His father was a prominent dentist, and his mother was a member of the Cherokee Nation. Holliday had two sisters, Martha and Alice.
As a young man, Holliday was an excellent marksman and a skilled horseman. He also developed a reputation as a gambler and a drinker. In 1872, Holliday left Georgia to seek his fortune in the American West.
Holliday first settled in Dallas, Texas, where he worked as a dentist. He soon became involved in gambling and began to frequent the city’s saloons. In 1875, Holliday moved to Denver, Colorado, where he opened a dental practice.
However, Holliday’s gambling habits led him into debt, and he was forced to sell his dental practice. He then moved to Leadville, Colorado, where he worked in a silver mine.
In 1880, Holliday moved to Tombstone, Arizona Territory. There he met Wyatt Earp, and the two men became friends. Holliday also became acquainted with the Clanton and McLaury brothers, who were notorious outlaws.
On October 26, 1881, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place. Holliday took part in the gunfight on the side of Wyatt Earp and his brothers. The gunfight lasted only about 30 seconds, but it left three men dead and three wounded.
After the gunfight, Holliday’s reputation as a gunfighter grew. He was arrested several times for various crimes, but he was never convicted. In 1882, Holliday left Tombstone and headed for New Mexico.
In 1887, Holliday’s health began to fail due to his heavy drinking and smoking habits. He went to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, in an attempt to improve his health. However, his condition continued to decline, and he died of tuberculosis on November 8, 1887.
