Dee Dee Bridgewater (born May 27, 1950) is an American jazz singer. She is a three-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist, as well as a Tony Award-winning stage actress.
Born Denise Eileen Garrett in Memphis, Tennessee, she was raised Catholic and sang in the church choir. Her father, Matthew Garrett, was a trumpeter and her mother, Daisy Mae, was a singer. Bridgewater’s father died when she was three years old and her mother when she was ten, so she was raised by her grandmother, Johnnie Mae Garrett.
Bridgewater began her career singing R&B and soul music in New York City nightclubs in the early 1970s. She recorded her first album, Afro Blue, in 1973. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award and featured the title track, which was written by Mongo Santamaria.
In 1974, Bridgewater joined the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra as the lead vocalist. The orchestra’s recording of “A Child Is Born” won a Grammy Award in 1975.
Bridgewater’s second album, Love and Peace: A Tribute to Horace Silver, was released in 1975. The album featured Bridgewater’s interpretations of Silver’s songs.
In 1976, Bridgewater recorded her third album, Dee Dee Bridgewater. The album featured the song “Sweet Rain”, which won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
In 1979, Bridgewater starred in the Broadway musical The Wiz as the Scarecrow. The production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
In 1986, Bridgewater recorded her fourth album, Keeping Tradition. The album featured the song “Mama Said”, which won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
In 1988, Bridgewater recorded her fifth album, Prelude to a Kiss. The album featured the title track, which was written by Duke Ellington.
In 1989, Bridgewater starred in the Broadway musical Black and Blue as Sadie Thompson. The production won a Tony Award for Best Musical.
In 1990, Bridgewater recorded her sixth album, Love and Peace: A Tribute to Paul Robeson. The album featured the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, which won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
In 1991, Bridgewater recorded her seventh album, The Language of Love. The album featured the song “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, which won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
